And the winner is….

Did you miss some of the Oscar winners in the cinema this year? Now is your chance whether it be for the first time or revisiting a favourite. Over the next week we’re re-showing some of the headliner films from the 97th Academy Awards which took place last night. Experience for yourself what makes these films worthy of their accolades by watching them on the big screen here at Cottage Road Cinema.

A Complete Unknown

 

First up we have Bob Bylan biopic “A Complete unknown”. While not winning any Oscars it’s a strong contender having been nominated for eight incuding best picture and best actor.   New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. Showing Monday 3rd March at 4:40pm.

 

Conclave

Up next with nominations for eight Oscars Conclave is one of our best performing films of the last year. After the unexpected death of the Pope, Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with managing the covert and ancient ritual of electing a new one. Sequestered in the Vatican with the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders until the process is complete, Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could lead to its downfall. Showing Tuesday 4th March at 7:50pm, Thursday 6th at 2pm for our senior screening (all welcome), and Sunday 9th at 7:40pm.

A Real Pain

Mismatched cousins David and Benji reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the pair’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. Showing Thursday 6th March at 5pm.

Wicked

Elphaba, an ostracized but defiant girl born with green skin, and Glinda, a privileged aristocrat born popular, become extremely unlikely friends in the magical Land of Oz. As the two girls struggle with their opposing personalities, their friendship is tested as both begin to fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and The Wicked Witch of the West. Showing on Thursday 6th March at 7:30pm.

The Brutalist

With ten nominations we’re kicking off the weekend with Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist. Escaping post-war Europe, visionary architect László Tóth arrives in America to rebuild his life, his work, and his marriage to his wife Erzsébet after being forced apart during wartime by shifting borders and regimes. On his own in a strange new country, László settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren recognizes his talent for building. But power and legacy come at a heavy cost. Showing Friday 7th March at 6:30pm (with intermission).

The Wild Robot

Although The Wild Robot missed out this time it was nominated for three Oscars including best Animated Feature Film and is our family favourite pick. After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot called Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island’s animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose. Showing Saturday 8th March at 1:45pm.

 

Anora

A new starter at Cottage Road, Anora, six nominations and four wins including Best Picture. A young sex worker from Brooklyn gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as his parents set out to get the marriage annulled. Showing Satuday 8th March at 7:45pm, Monday 10th at 4:50pm (subtitled) & Thursday 13th at 2pm as our senior screening (all welcome).
